About Me
MARTINA BARTA is not just a singer — she’s a storyteller, a dreamer, and a bridge between worlds. Her voice carries not just melodies, but stories, emotions, and dreams. Born and raised in Prague, her music is rooted in tradition but constantly reaching for something new. With a voice that moves effortlessly between power and vulnerability, and a stage presence that captivates every audience, Martina has carved out a path that’s as unique as it is inspiring.
Martina’s journey started early. Growing up in a musical family, she was introduced to the world of jazz by her father, a winemaker and passionate amateur jazz musician, who filled their home with its rich and timeless sounds. This blend of artistry and tradition shaped Martina’s path. Surrounded by the sounds of violin, flute, and piano, which she mastered as a child. But it wasn’t just about learning instruments—it was about finding a way to express herself. Her classical training, including years spent mastering the French horn at the prestigious Jan Neruda Grammar School with a focus on classical music in Prague, gave her the foundation to explore something more personal: her voice.
After studying voice at the Prague Conservatory, Martina moved to Berlin in 2011 to dive into the world of jazz at the Jazz Institute Berlin. Here, she trained with legends like David Friedman, Judy Niemack, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Greg Cohen. Berlin became her artistic playground, and by the time she graduated in 2016 she was already making her mark as a bold and versatile performer.
But Martina’s ambitions went further. New York called, and in 2023, she completed a Master’s degree in Jazz Arts / Jazz Voice at the Manhattan School of Music as a DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholar and a recipient of a study scholarship of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. Under the mentorship of Theo Bleckmann and Buster Williams, she pushed her artistry to new heights. Performing in a city known as the Mecca of Jazz was a dream come true—and it was only the beginning.
For Martina, music is about connection. Some of her most powerful moments have come from collaborations. One of her closest partnerships is with legendary vibraphonist David Friedman, with whom she formed a duo in 2019. Their performances are intimate, daring, and full of life—a dialogue between two artists who trust and challenge each other in equal measure. Another cornerstone of Martina’s career is her collaboration with her sister, jazz pianist and composer Kristina Barta. Together, they’ve created unforgettable music, including their award-winning song “Find Peace of Mind,” which won Best Jazz Song at the 2016 Bohemia Jazz Fest. Martina’s work with the legendary Czech Felix Slováček Big Band, where she’s been a featured soloist since 2011, has also allowed her to explore the grandeur of big band jazz while staying true to her own voice. And then there was Eurovision Song Contest. In 2017, Martina represented the Czech Republic with her heartfelt performance of “My Turn,” connecting with millions across Europe in an unforgettable moment that showcased her ability to move listeners on a global stage.
Martina’s voice has carried her to some of the most iconic stages in the world. She’s performed at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Berlin Philharmonie, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Each performance is a new chapter in her story, a chance to share her passion with audiences who leave feeling moved and inspired.
Martina splits her time between Berlin, Prague, and New York, drawing inspiration from each city. In Prague, she feels her roots. Berlin fuels her creativity with its edge and freedom. And New York—always buzzing with possibilities—keeps her reaching higher.
Stay tuned for more from Martina Barta —her journey is just getting started…
